Temperance – XIV

Temperance
Temperance symbolizes having the patience to do something and do it right. The idea being that change is an uncertain process; but if done correctly, the results will be fruitful indeed. This card represents adaptation to our situation. Those who are trained in outdoors survival are representative of Temperance. Improvisation is the core of this card. One may not always have what one wants to facilitate the desired change, but one always has what one needs. Mothers have long said, “Patience is a virtue” and Temperance proves that Mother does, in fact, know best!
Upright: Temperance represents finding the synergy that works best for all. This card symbolizes working together to achieve a common goal. Those who are skilled in managing how others are working together have got Temperance around their little finger. Those who are adept at interpersonal relationships, and those who are able to easily empathize with others, also are signified by this card. A harmonious balance is present. Go with the flow and not against it. Temperance advises us to work with others, not against them. Patience and perseverance can take us far indeed; if we are able achieve mastery of understanding where others are coming from. Temperance shows that true flexibility is adopting the motto, “Whatever happens is the right thing that happens.”
Reversed: Temperance reversed means there is a lack of understanding. This card indicates a poor working relationship because of intolerance. “Jumping the gun” is associated with Temperance when reversed because we may be impatient for things to start moving. It may appear to us that others are holding things up or moving too slowly. This card can indicate a lack of good judgment. Temperance reversed reminds us to have patience because getting there is half the fun. Take the time to enjoy the process and do not worry about the end result. Temperance advises us all that although we may just want to get it over with and skip to the end, the journey is where the experience lies; not at the finish line. Do not become so focused that life passes by in a flash. Time flies ever forward and never backward. Take the time to plan carefully and include rest breaks, says Temperance when reversed because going slowly and methodically is far better than rushing it and having everything blow up in your face.
